The curious paradox is that when
I accept myself just as I am,
then I can change.

Carl Rogers, Ph.D

Working with Individuals:

In individual therapy, I focus on creating a space for clients to share and relate more fully to their stories, emotions, thoughts, and somatic (body/internal) experiences. Individual therapy allows for a deep and personalized focus into your individual lived-experience as well as the development of a powerful therapist-client relationship. This dynamic provides ample growth opportunities and one-on-one support during our in-depth therapeutic exploration and process of integration.

In the first few sessions (whether it be for individual or family therapy), I will focus on getting a sense of what your current struggles are, what’s going well, and your personal history. I will also want a clear sense of what you are hoping to gain during our work together so that I can best support your process of growth and healing.

Working with Couples/Relationships:

Being in, maintaining, and sustaining relationships is one of the hardest things to do as a human being. Even the healthiest relationships require effort and ever-changing adjustments. I work with couples and people in various forms of relationship who are seeking to increase communication and, if applicable, physical and emotional intimacy. Difficulties may be due to struggles such as (though not limited to) trust issues, healthy boundaries, unmet needs, stagnation or boredom, difference in cultures, values, and/or beliefs, and constant conflict. In my practice I welcome and celebrate diversity in gender, sexual orientation, and sexual and relational expression in my practice. Whether you are monogamous, polyamorous, straight, LGBTQIA, or somewhere in between, I will guide you in a process of relinquishing limiting or self-defeating thoughts, general distressing habitual and/or communication patterns, unproductive conflict styles, as well as increasing the ability for each party to express their implicit and explicit thoughts, emotions, impulses, and needs to allow experiences of love, meaning, and connection to thrive. It is also my belief that being in a positive relationship requires that you know how to fight with each other in a healthy way! So instead of eliminating conflict and all differences, I will support you in finding ways to engage in conflict that doesn’t simultaneously take away from the feeling of being in a loving and safe relationship.

Working with Families:

In family therapy, I intentionally avoid clinical paradigms of finding and treating an “identified patient”, or problem person, in the family, and instead take a larger, systemic view of the family. In this view, I bring the family’s attention and sustained curiosity towards the interplay of causes, conditions, structures of power, boundaries, and roles enacted and perpetuated by each family member that collectively contribute to the difficulties the family is currently struggling with. I strive to balance individual needs, concerns, and voices with those of the family as a whole. With openness, compassion, and respect for each person’s voice, we will explore mood and stress-related issues, reoccurring conflicts, destructive relational patterns, loss of connection and/or communication between family members, and any major transitions. Ultimately, it is my goal to create and support a safe environment, where family members can work towards validating, accepting, and honoring each person’s lived experience in order to move towards deeper understanding, connection, and functionality.
